Wang Meng was the youngest of the Four Great Masters of the Yuan Dynasty, and this scroll is his earliest known dated work. The painting shows a lake dominated by rounded mountain peaks, reminiscent of the scenery in Wang Meng's native southern China. To contour the surfaces of the mountains and rocks, Wang Meng used soft "hemp fiber" brush strokes, ropy lines with light traces of ink from individual brush hairs.
The artist's inscription in the upper left corner reads: "In late spring of 1354 Wang Meng of Wuxing painted Secluded Dwelling in the Summer Mountatins for His Honor, the County Magistrate Zhongfang."
