The Truth Beneath

Sunday, November 12, 2017, 2 PM

Part of the Korean Film Festival DC 2017.

In person: Lee Kyoung-mi, director

It’s taken nearly a decade for Lee Kyoung-mi (who appeared at the Korean Film Festival DC in 2009) to follow up on her beloved debut feature, Crush and Blush. We are pleased to welcome her back to present her tense and stylish sophomore effort, which is well worth the wait. When the young daughter of Jong-chan (Kim Joo-hyuk), a news anchor-turned-politician, goes missing on the eve of a close election, he decides to wait to report it to the police—mainly because his campaign promise is to “protect our children.” His wife, Yeon-hong (So Ye-jin, in a spellbinding performance), has other ideas and launches her own desperate investigation, in the process unearthing a web of corruption and deceit that upends her formerly placid life. “A sumptuous and anarchic political thriller, kidnap drama, suspenseful whodunnit and kaleidoscopic descent into delirium” (Pierce Conran, Screen Anarchy). (Dir.: Lee Kyoung-mi, Korea, 2016, 102 min., DCP, Korean with English subtitles)
