Goryeo Art and Culture Study Day

The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the Smithsonian’s national museum of Asian art, invites advanced graduate students in Buddhist studies and East Asian studies to participate in Goryeo Art and Culture Study Day on Thursday, February 20, 2020. This daylong event focuses on Goryeo Buddhist sculpture and its dedication materials (now on display in a special loan exhibition in the Sackler Gallery) and Goryeo Buddhist paintings in the museum collection. Under the guidance of two renowned experts in Korean Buddhist art, students are offered a unique opportunity to learn more about Goryeo Buddhist art and religious practice by closely studying works on display and in storage.

Students are encouraged to attend the related symposium Korean Buddhist Images and Dedication Practice (on Thursday evening, February 20, and all day on Friday, February 21) organized in conjunction with the exhibition Sacred Dedication: A Korean Buddhist Masterpiece. Speakers at this symposium examine recent research findings surrounding a thirteenth-century Korean gilt wood sculpture of the Water-Moon Gwaneum and its dedication materials on display. They also discuss Korean image production and consecration practice in a broader East Asian context. Click here for more information about the symposium.

On Saturday afternoon, February 22, students are also invited to a public program in which monks from Korea demonstrate elements of a Korean Buddhist dedication ceremony.

The Study Day is intended for twenty graduate students. Lunch is offered on the day of the event. Financial support for travel and lodging is not provided.

The Goryeo Art and Culture Study Day is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea.
